Individual cognitive testing is often required as part of the application for admission to independent schools. One of the following batteries may be used: The Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence (WPPSI)-4th Edition (4 and 5 year olds), the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC)-5th Edition (for 6 to 13 year olds), or the Woodcock Johnson Tests of Cognitive Abilities-4th Edition (required by some schools outside of Northern Virginia). A report is usually sent to the parents within a week. Results are also sent directly to the independent schools as requested by the parents.
A cognitive assessment report can also be submitted with applications to a variety of special academic programs as supplementary information. For example, parents of 2nd to 5th graders who refer their children for Advanced Academic Program/ Level IV services in the Fairfax County Public Schools often include results of the WISC-V with their application.
